The students have started using pedometers in PE class. Pedometers count how many steps the using is taking. The students think its so cool to be wearing the pedometers because it tracks how many steps they are taking. It is awesome to see them moving more and checking to see if their step count went up. After each class the students log their data on a form that collects their number of steps taken, distance traveled, and approximate calories burned for the period.
Today the 6th Grade PE class performed some yoga poses. It was a pretty awesome experience. Our peer teachers Whitley, Vivi, and Katrina, taught us some basic poses like the Downward Dog, The Warrior, and the Crow. As a physical educator, I feel that it is important to expose children to as much physical activity out there. This was a great way to try something new. I even got a good stretch trying these poses.
The climbing ropes were installed on Monday of this week. As soon as the ropes were put up, the students started to climb them like they were never gone. Many of the students were excited to have the ropes back to climb or just do flips. The climbing ropes requires a tremendous amount of upper body strength. There have been several students that had never climbed the rope before. They have been practicing and now they can reach the top. Great Job to those who have been practicing. It truly goes to show that with practice, you are able to accomplish any task.
Today was a fun day in PE classes. We played several team building games and activities. As you can see by the pictures, the students were having a lot of fun working together and completing the task at hand.
TCPS students are trying there skills of juggling. Everyone is doing a great job learning the basic mechanics of juggling. It’s pretty easy to learn. All you have to do is practice.
Here some exciting pictures of the 2nd and 3rd graders playing Capture the Flag. This is an invasion type game that includes communication, teamwork, dodging, and running.
On April 5th our school went a day without shoes to raise awareness for those people in developing countries who don’t have shoes. The PE classes on that day also went a day with out equipment. The students made soccer balls out of recycled paper and trash.
The kindergarten and first graders learned how to throw and catch frisbees. The throwers were all pretty good at keeping their “plates of ice cream” nice and flat. The catchers opened their “alligator mouths” really wide.
Frisbee can be a fun activity to play at the park with a friend or family member. Here is a link to find more frisbee games.
The students of TCPS are currently in a unit of soccer. They are participating in dribbling, passing and throw-in drills. They even have played in some small teamed games of soccer.
