2011-2012 TCPS Library Agreement

TCPS Library Agreement 2011-2012

Reading is fun and so are libraries.  Checking out books and taking them home is even more fun.  But it is also a privilege.  The TCPS library offers students the chance to hone research skills, work independently, and select books and other materials for research or reading pleasure.  Properly used, the library can be a place to cultivate a lifelong love of reading while learning the lasting values of responsibility (one of our keys!) and independence.  Below are guidelines that you must read and sign before you begin checking out books from the TCPS library.  Please go over the terms below together and then sign, date, are return this agreement to the library or to your child’s teacher as soon as possible.

Check it out—The Fine Print

TCPS students in good standing with the library may check out books.  Students remain in good standing as long as their books are consistently returned in a timely manner in the condition in which they were received. Lost books, damaged books, excessive numbers of overdue books may necessitate limiting library privileges until the problem can be resolved.  The number of books that each student is allowed to check out depends on their grade level.  K-5 students are able to check-out up to four books at a time for a period of two weeks and Middle School students in grades 6-8 can check-out up to six books for a period of three weeks.

  • All students may renew books as long as they do not have any overdue books that have not been checked in.  Materials need not be brought in to renew them.  Simply supply the author and title, or the barcode number, and ask the librarian to renew the item that you have checked out, or use the sign out sheet on the library desk.

  • There are no fines for late books; however students will not be able to check out any more books if they have overdue books.  There is a minimum charge of $15.00 to replace a lost or damaged book.

  • Books may be placed in the return bin in the library at any time, not just during the student’s official library period.

  • Periodically, overdue notices are distributed by the classroom teachers or the librarian.  If materials are not returned promptly at this time, we will assume they are lost and the student will be responsible for the full replacement cost (price of the item plus shipping and library processing).  A notice will be sent to the student’s parents itemizing lost items and the associated costs.

  • Borrowers are responsible for damage that occurs to a book while it is checked out in their name.  If a book has been checked out that is already damaged, please call this to the attention of the librarian.

  • Math and/or Science books are checked out to students in 6-8 grades. These books are due at the end of the school year and will be collected by each student’s Math and Science teacher. THE REPLACEMENT COST FOR A LOST OR DAMAGED TEXT BOOK IS $55.00. Please take special care of text books that are taken home by covering them carefully.
