What is round, has five holes, and is used in first grade?

ANSWER: the great “desk sets” created by the first graders…  The teacher brought in the circular, wooden disks; the students created works of art that hold three pencils, a highlighter, and an editing pen!  One of our “techno team”  in the first grade will post some photos of them soon.  In the first six days of school we have used all our tools… pencils, highlighter to highlight all the directions we now read for ourselves, and an editing pen to edit our writing.  We are learning the special editing symbols that tell us we need to use a capital letter, that a word is misspelled, or to remind us we forgot some punctuation.  We have a rainbow of colors we use to edit!

This year, the notebook is the “thing”… Students have special pockets inside their notebooks- one for homework, one for maps, one for our 0-100 chart, and more to come! We already worked in partner groups… and then as a whole class… to brainstorm a whole dictionary of “school nouns”.  Our class has some “school nouns” that many first grades may not have.  One is snake… and the proper noun, Monty.  Monty is our six foot ball python – who came out of his tank to have a close encounter with all the first graders on the first day of school.

From all the first graders and Monty and the teacher… check in often to see all the neat things we are up to!
