Board of Trustees

The Child's Primary School is governed by the Board of Trustees. The Board is responsible for:

Ensuring adherence to the mission, values, and philosophy of TCPS
Developing and implementing a long term strategic plan to promote the future success of TCPS
Hiring, managing, and establishing compensation for the Executive Director
Providing financial oversight for the school through approving the budget, establishing annual tuition rates, and appropriately managing the school's capital assets
Developing, reviewing and maintaining the necessary policies to ensure the school operates in compliance with applicable legal standards and to minimize the school's exposure to legal action

2010-2011 Board of Trustees

Greg Heinzinger

President

Greg joined the board in Nov 2007 and was elected President in June 2008. He brings experience in technology development, business planning/leadership, and non-profit board experience. Greg is a Sr. Vice President with Qualcomm's Technology Licensing division and has held senior leadership positions in a number of Qualcomm's emerging businesses. He has a PhD from University of California at Berkeley, where he also did his undergraduate studies. He also serves on the ICSI board, CITRIS advisory board, UC Berkeley Engineering Advisory board, and his local planning board. Greg lives in San Diego with his wife Kerstin and has two children that attend TCPS.

Sherry Risch

Founder

Sherry is not only one of the founders of TCPS, but also one the Principal and the middle school Language Arts Teacher. Sherry has a B.S. in Special Education, as well as Elementary Education from Miami University, Oxford Ohio. She also served on the Committee for Primary Assessment and Curriculum Development in Ohio. Sherry is the founding board member of Women's Empowerment International, whose mission is to provide micro-credit loans to women living in poverty.

Carol Rainey

Secretary

After working for 27 years as a teacher and administrator in New York City's school system, Carol Rainey "retired" and moved to San Diego to be a full-time grandma. Carol holds a BA & MS degree in Education with a specialization in reading as well an MS, P.D. in Education Administration and Supervision. She served as a 3rd grade teacher, reading specialist, coordinator in Special Education programs, and an Elementary School Assistant Principal in New York City. Here in San Diego she came out of retirement to serve as Principal of a K-8 private school for 4 years. She continues to be an active volunteer in the greater San Diego community through several organizations, her church, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir. She enjoys dabbling in photography and going to the theater and is very devoted to her 6 grandchildren (3 in San Diego - TCPS students/alums and 3 in Maryland). She is an ardent supporter of TCPS and is looking forward to serving on the Board of Directors.

Jon Belmonte

Jon joined the TCPS Board of Trustees in May 2012. He currently leads Cedar Ridge Ventures, which works with strong entrepreneurs to help turn great ideas into valuable & meaningful companies. Previously, Jon served as Chief Operating Office of Active Network (ACTV) from 2000-2011. Prior to his tenure at Active, Jon co-founded LeagueLink and was a management consultant at Boston Consulting Group. He holds an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University and a B.S.E. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Jon lives in San Diego with his wife Julie and has two children that attend TCPS.

Susan Howard

Susan joined the board in January 2011. Her twenty plus years of teaching and administrative experience at TCPS make it possible for her to offer a detailed, historic, and unique perspective of the school and its development over the years. Now semi-retired, Susan has recently completed certification as a Special Education Advocate as well as her certification in Community Mediation. Additionally, she has experience as a facilitator with various San Diego groups. She graduated from San Diego State University with a B.A. in Psychology and then completed her studies for her teaching credential. Susan lives in San Diego with her husband Bob, and they are parents to three daughters.

Marianne Schafstall

Marianne Schafstall joined the TCPS Board of Trustees in 2012. She has over a decade experience providing management consulting services to a wide range of clients in the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. She has volunteered for years in reading and art programs at San Diego public schools, and has served on a number of school and community governing boards. Marianne holds an M.B.A. from the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia and a B.A from Princeton University. She lives in San Diego with her husband Joe, and her 2 children.

Emilio Vargas II

Emilio is co-founder and President of Marketing Excellence Incorporated. He has over 20 years of marketing and business management experience. Emilio developed his expertise while working as a marketing and business executive for several distinguished companies including Delta Airlines, Marriott, United Parcel Service, ENCAD (A Kodak Company) and SKF. Emilio graduated from Saint John's University in New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Accounting. He earned two master's degrees from Pace University's Lubin School of Business, New York - MBA Strategic Marketing and MBA Organizational Behavior. Emilio teaches marketing, management, and leadership at Alliant International University, National University, and the University of Phoenix. He is the Chairman for the Alliant International University Academic Advisory Board for Marketing and Public Relations. Emilio, his wife Claudia and 5 children reside in Poway.

Alan Lonbom

Alan joined the TCPS Board of Trustees in November 2012. He is a Certified Public Accountant specializing in the energy and utilities industry and has worked with Deloitte & Touche LLP for 35 years. He also has two years experience as the CFO for a technology start up. He has served as President for the Junior Achievement organization in West Palm Beach, Florida and Raleigh, North Carolina and is currently on the board of the San Diego Symphony. Alan received a Bachelor of Science and Masters degree in Accounting from the University of Illinois. He and his wife Jennifer, who is an active TCPS volunteer, reside with their son, a TCPS student, in Del Mar.
